Please give a virtual round of applause to Pioneer’s editorial aces.

The National Electric Cooperative Statewide Editors Association (SEA) Willies Awards did exactly that last week, honoring enterprising work by the magazine team as tops in the nation. Pioneer earned 2 top honors:

Just as sweet were the judge’s comments. One judge said this about Coming Out of the Dark:

“… hands down, the best article I’ve ever read on the opioid crisis … The flow is perfect, and the information is right on target. Well done. I’d give it a 60, if I could (50 was the highest possible score).”

it takes a village illustration with image in a state design

Brandon’s illustration delighted another judge, who concluded:

“This was a beautifully designed piece. I love the combination of photography and the state illustration. This was compelling, engaging, and wonderfully done.”

Both efforts were part of The Changing Face of Rural Health Care, our yearlong M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust supported magazine series shining a light and spurring positive action in the rural communities we serve in the Northwest and West. The multimedia series was a team effort from start to finish. Yes, it really does take a village.

The recognition, by our peers, for journalism that makes a difference is icing on the cake.
