Utility Pioneers are served by a team of dedicated industry communicators. In July one Pioneer editor won national recognition for a commitment to storytelling.

Pioneer Associate Editor Victoria Hampton was selected as one of 80 rising stars in the utilities industry by Public Utilities Fortnightly.

Nominees for the association’s 2022 Fortnightly Under Forties feature represent 29 utilities, utility regulatory commissions, and other industry organizations. Nominees were featured in the July 2022 issue of the magazine.

Mike Teegarden, Pioneer’s editorial director for electric magazines, nominated Hampton for the industry honor.

“Victoria, not yet 30, has been turning out stories about our members that have the phones ringing and the emails flowing in,” Teegarden wrote in the nomination. “A wonderful communicator, she is organized, efficient and graced with excellent people skills. She can work and connect with C-suite staff or field personnel. She blends writing feature and energy news stories with managing annual reports and editing and designing pages for our magazine members.”

Fortnightly asked each nominee three questions about their career path and the impact of mentorship.

Here are Hampton’s answers.

What's most rewarding about your career to date?

I love telling people’s stories. During interviews, there is that magic moment when your subject shares a piece of themselves that you know will connect with your readers. I live for those moments. Shining the spotlight on everyday people and sharing their passions and triumphs has a way of bringing us closer together.

Who mentored you in our industry?

I have an incredible team who helps me meet the needs of our members and grow my skills and knowledge. Every day, I am surrounded by people who make me better at my job. It’s truly priceless.

Mike Teegarden has invested in my career growth and ensures my accomplishments are recognized. For the first time in my career, I have opportunities to advance and a manager who will help me get there. His 30+ years of experience has helped me be a better editor and understand the many complexities of the publishing world.

Pam Blair was my mentor as an intern and continues to play a vital role in advising and guiding my feature stories. I credit my growth as a writer to her support. Whenever I need help, she is always there. I wish every writer had a Pam on call.

How do you advise younger people just starting out in this industry?

Advocate for your continued education. This industry has a wealth of conferences, workshops and certificate programs that help you learn the co-op difference, grow as a communicator and, most importantly, build your network of industry professionals from co-ops across the country.

The connections you make in this industry will help you succeed and give your work greater purpose.
