Are you a skilled, experienced journalist looking for that elusive combination of stable employment, great benefits and a challenging yet rewarding subject matter? Good news: this may be the opportunity you’re seeking!

California Energy Markets, an independent, award-winning, subscription-based newsletter covering the electric and natural gas sectors in California and the Southwest, is seeking a full-time staff writer reporting on agencies including the California Public Utilities Commission, California Energy Commission and California Air Resources Board, as well as other state and regional energy topics.

Published by NewsData, CEM has provided its energy-professional readership with in-depth and high-quality coverage since 1989.

This remote-work position offers a front-row journalistic seat in a dynamic energy era, as California and the broader West navigate decarbonization, growing electrification, a regionalizing grid, resource adequacy, wildfires, transmission expansion and myriad other issues within CEM's scope of energy policy, markets, resources and infrastructure.

NewsData, a Pioneer Utility Resources subsidiary, offers a competitive salary; a strong benefits package; a professional, respectful and enriching working environment; a chance to practice on the cutting edge of energy journalism in an ever-evolving region; and opportunities to expand skills in ancillary services such as podcasting, social media, events and more. Interested applicants should submit a resume, cover letter, three references and three writing samples. Please submit writing samples as attachments through Indeed.

Candidates living in or with roots in the Southwestern United States, and/or having experience with energy, business, or regulatory beats will receive preference. Please be sure to indicate your connection to the Southwest and/or these beats in your cover letter.

The Staff Writer’s responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Typically producing two news stories (600-plus words) and two briefs (at least 350 words) per week.
  • Weekly monitoring of California energy-related agency (CPUC, CEC, CARB) calendars and dockets.
  • An ability to develop (or have existing) knowledge and expertise on utility regulation, the larger energy industry, new technologies, and general issues around energy policies, resources, markets and infrastructure in California and the Southwest.
  • Remote or in-person coverage of agency meetings and events.
  • Staying on top of general industry developments in California and sometimes the broader West.
  • Being available via phone, email and/or instant messaging during work hours Monday-Friday to communicate with the editor and other colleagues to coordinate coverage.
  • Availability to answer questions, review copy and help with newsletter production.
  • Locating publicly available or original graphics and/or photographs for stories.
  • Occasionally appearing on NewsData podcasts to discuss energy matters of interest.
  • Remotely participating in weekly editorial meetings and monthly company meetings.

  • At least three years of professional journalism experience, with preference given to residents of California or the Southwest.
  • Well-developed research, writing and reporting skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and professionalism when dealing with co-workers and external contacts.
  • Reliable, high-speed home internet.
  • Attention to detail, including in writing (e.g. spelling, grammar, following style guidelines) and reporting (e.g fact-checking).
  • A positive, service-minded, collaborative approach.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and ability to edit and work with Word documents.
