Meet David Herder, the newest member of our team. David joined Pioneer Utility Resources in January as an Associate Editor. He’s hit the ground running. David is already partnering with utility customers in Washington, learning names and a whole lot more. David brings a natural curiosity and eagerness to serve others.
Where did it all begin for David? Before he could read on his own, he remembers forcing his parents to read The Oregonian’s sports section with him. Born and raised in Portland, David brings a passion for finding and sharing knowledge in engaging ways. David spent 2018 as a reporter with Sports Illustrated, working on stories ranging from the World Cup, to ALS foundations to even his beloved Seattle Mariners. He also worked with Northwestern Athletics Communications for four years, helping to share athletes’ stories with the community and deepen the fan-athlete relationship. He graduated from Northwestern University in 2019 after studying journalism, economics and integrated marketing communications, earning his master’s in journalism at the same time.
Asked why he chose to start his career with Pioneer, here is what David said:
“Magazines are where thinking happens. We don’t just share the news that will be on the agenda for dinner table conversations. Magazines take the time to deeply look through topics and help guide how people think about issues going forward.
“At Ruralite magazine, we’re able to look at topics that deeply impact our readers, like opioids and volunteerism, and think about how they affect us, our communities and how we go about our lives,” David says.
David is excited to return home to family in the Pacific Northwest. He enjoys being active outdoors when weather allows, whether hiking, golfing or playing wiffle ball, and when weather doesn’t cooperate, he can be found indoors reading, watching movies or finding some other way to engage with storytelling.
