Did you know as many as 1 in 4 Americans reported not being registered to vote in the 2020 presidential election?
Cooperatives and other community-owned utilities are looking for ways to get their members registered and ready to vote.
Sept. 28, 2021, is National Voter Registration Day. Utilities across the nation are using this day as an opportunity to empower consumers to exercise their right to vote. Co-ops Vote, a nonpartisan project of America’s Electric Cooperatives, is an official partner of National Voter Registration Day.
Even if your utility isn’t organizing voter registration drives and meet-and-greets with elected officials this year, you can still take part in National Voter Registration Day by engaging consumers on social media.
When you are creating and sharing National Voter Registration Day content to social media, follow these 5 tips:
Keep messages nonpartisan
National Voter Registration Day is a nonpartisan organization focused on voter engagement. Empower your co-op members to exercise their right to vote and educate themselves on issues, without taking a side.
Know the hashtags
Hashtags will bring more visibility to your posts. This year, use the hashtags #NationalVoterRegistrationDay and #VoteReady. You can also use #CoopsVote.
Know your audience
In order to keep messages relevant to your members, get to know who they are and what they want to hear. For example, older members might want to know how to register online. Members who recently moved might want to know how to check if their voter registration is current.
Share great content ideas
Cooperation Among Cooperatives is the sixth Cooperative Principle, and that also applies to sharing social media content ideas! National Voter Registration Day and Co-ops Vote are there to help you. Share their posts or adapt content from their communications resources.
