Oklahoma Living magazine’s website, www.okl.coop, won top honors at the 2022 Statewide Editors Association Willie Wiredhand Awards for Best Digital Communication.

”Superb example of a cooperative website; okl.coop could be used as a study on how to effectively take a printed publication and online presence and match them so that each compliments the other,” contest judges wrote.

Utility Pioneers at the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives partnered with Pioneer’s Powerful Web team for nearly a year to redesign first the statewide association’s website, then the magazine website.

“Pioneer’s team honored incorporating our print redesign into the web redesign, and that marriage was done perfectly,” Oklahoma Living Editor Hayley Leatherwood says. “Most importantly, it is a site that is accessible and enjoyable by all.”

Website design highlights:

  • Focus on photos: Layout showcases photography in alignment with the magazine logo and layout standards which debuted in the May 2022 issue of the printed publication.

  • Contest drivers: The website uses web forms to automate the magazine’s popular photo contest, Okie Snaps. The editorial staff can easily moderate contest photos, enable reader voting, and highlight winners in the Okie Snaps section.

  • Food for thought: Recipes are separated by month with the ability to link, share and drill down to individual recipes. The updates improve the site visitor experience and whet reader appetites for more food features.

  • Reimagined events: Previously, all events were static content with the schedule for each month listed and becoming outdated as events passed and the month went on. The updated website automatically removes event listings from the home page after they are over and displays future events proactively. To meet the needs of a large geographic magazine readership, website visitors can filter events by region within Oklahoma and by electric cooperative. The editorial team at Oklahoma Living can include event start and end times, date ranges and provide additional information that would not be supported within the printed publication.

We share the honor equally with your team,” Hayley says. “Pioneer gave us a site we can be proud of, and we feel will be a trendsetter among statewide magazines.”
