I joined a thoughtful group of Certified Cooperative Communicator board members and NRECA staffers who were ready to move the CCC program to the next level. We shared four goals:
1.) Create a cohort system with in-person learning so those in the program would not have to go through it alone.
2.) Remove the stress of a four-hour, all-or-nothing test.
3.) Prepare communicators to do their jobs well, rather than simply test their knowledge.
4.) Offer value well after the credentials were earned.
Our job as utility communicators is always changing. The CCC program should be there to help all of us grow and adjust through the years. Learn how the program will evolve on our blog.
Congratulations to Theresa Phillips, winner of Pioneer Utility Resources’ 2021 Dave D’Avanzo Communications Award! As public relations manager for Lassen Municipal Utility District in Susanville, California, Theresa keeps consumers informed despite a steady stream of wildfires and rolling blackouts. Her deft use of storytelling and empathy stands out!

Readers can be drawn to many things, the narrative of course, but also interesting imagery, informative graphics and cool design. Headlines, subheads and bullet points are primary hooks to reel in a reader. Each should be baited with care. But what about the pull quote?
Pull quotes too often end up a sad afterthought or simply a convenient space filler. Or they scream dull and get in the way of good storytelling. We asked our editorial team of smarties to share when pull quotes work and when to avoid them.
Are you planning strategic stories for 2022? A communications plan reflects what (and when) different audiences should hear about utility efforts. Filling communications channels with planned, strategic content prevents magazines, social channels and advertising efforts from being taken over by reactive messaging.
Utility Pioneer Pam Spettel shares four steps for finding strategic stories:
1. Identify Story Categories
2. Support Shared Goals
3. Measure Potential Impact
4. Celebrate Value

To kick off National Cooperative Month, we’re sharing results from our 2021 Pioneer Pulse survey. I consider this our annual review, where you, our members, check in and let us know how we’re doing.
We share key takeaways this week on our blog. Curious about how YOU can join our communications co-op? We explain how membership works, too. We’d love to have you join our co-op family!
